East Beach Farmer’s Market – Norfolk, VA

photo 12 - photo 52 photo 12 photo 22 photo 1 Every single time I see someone using fresh ingredients from their garden, I regret not planting one this year! My mom has been telling me about my grandparents’ garden which is just blowing up this summer and I’m so jealous. I ache for those sweet, crisp tomatoes, those succulent, bright zucchinis and all kinds of other crunchy veggies. She told me that they just canned 22 dozen ears of corn last weekend. 22 DOZEN!!!! Holy. TITS!!! That’s a lot of organic corn. Thankfully, my family is coming down to visit us soon and I’ve already got an order in to  my grandpa for some string beans, some tomatoes,  zucchini and corn.

We wouldn’t have been able to have much of a garden though because we don’t have a whole lot of space at our new place. I have planted a couple of herbs in planters on our  little 5’x8′ patio area, but that’s about it. So we have to resort to going to the farmers market. Not a bad thing though! It gets us out of the house on a Saturday morning and burns some of Arlie-girl’s energy as she’s meeting lots of other doggies. This farmers market is great because it has all the stuff you want, but then it also has several booths that have unique veggies that we’ve never even seen! How cool are these donut peaches? Combining donuts and peaches? Oooooooh yeah! (note: this is  not actually a cross breed between donuts and peaches)

One of the booths that we never miss is the Full Quiver Farm booth. We’re going to be doing a full blog post on this farm soon because we like it so much! Full Quiver Farm offers fresh meats that you can pre-order from animals right on their farm. We have ordered everything from grass-fed pork to fresh eggs and everything is delicious! More about that later.

There was a new food truck there this weekend and it was like a godsend because we have been searching for good ice cream around here for weeks! It’s so weird living in a beach/vacation town and not being able to find good ice cream, but we have tried everything we can thing of. Everyone does soft serve or like slushies or milkshakes so thick you’re basically sucking soft serve through a straw. We were SO happy to see this truck! Fresh made every day. Antibiotic free. Hard pack ice cream. Yesssssss! We had coffee cookies and cream and it was delish. Not too coffee-flavored, more just creamy and cookie-y. Yum. Also, did I mention that we went to the farmer’s market before we ate breakfast, so this ice cream was our breakfast… We’re adults, we do what we want. Arlie-girl even got a little bite of ice cream. Her daddy spoils her!

We LOVE having her! We’ve only had her for 6 months and now we don’t know what we did before we had her! You would love it

  3. I grew up with a garden and it’s the one thing I miss most about “home”. I moved from PA to DE last year and am in an apartment for the time being, which means no garden! I still get to enjoy my parent’s when I visit, but it’s not the same. Luckily, I found a local farm to get all of my fresh produce needs from! That ice cream looks so good and your dog is adorable! I want a dog so bad!

I love that you were able to find a local farm for that stuff. We’ve found one where we get cage free eggs, grass fed beef and pork too! An the dog loves going out to the farm too 😉

  4. Great photos! Love all the fresh fruits and veggies locally grown. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  5. Those tomatoes!!!! You’re lucky to have such a great farmers’ market nearby. About your 5×8 gardening space – does it get good sunlight? You could totally do a vertical garden, somehow. It’s funny you posted about the hard-packed ice cream and the fact that it was your breakfast. I actually had a few scoops for dinner from a local truck tonight. I’m off to make up for it with a mid-evening run! 😉

Haha yes we made ourselves get out and get active with our Arlie-girl to make up for it too, but it was so worth it! And I think I could do a vertical garden because it gets so much HOT HOT sunlight that it actually kills stuff haha

  6. Really great photos! I love farmers’ markets and you put us right there!

  7. Farmer’s markets are one of the best things about summer! So fun that you can bring your doggy along. Yummy food for you two, new doggy friends for Arlie-girl. 🙂

  8. This market looks like a little slice of heaven, and I’m pretty jealous! Those tomatoes look amazing, I sure hope they had some green ones!

  9. Love farmer’s markets! Can’t wait to check out others on our vacation, maybe we will have to hit this one up!

Thanks Angela! I’m sorry you’re in the cold and rain, but that means warmth is on it’s way 🙂

And farmers markets are the best – I don’t care what anybody else says. I’m like a kid at a candy shop!
